On Saturday 14 February, Liverpool Hung Gar Kung Fu Friendship Association, Pagoda Arts and award-winning dance company Movema will lead a procession through the city centre, joined by members of the Chinese community and young people.
Incorporating a street theatre piece with colourful Beijing opera-style costumes and stilt walkers from Artemis Productions, the parade will start on Church Street, leading on to Paradise Street in Liverpool ONE before heading to the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool.
Liverpool ONE
Beautiful Chinese lanterns will be on display on Paradise Street and College Lane and the retail area will be lit up red in honour of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
Shops, bars and restaurants will also be joining in the festivities with exclusive Lunar New Year gift ideas and fantastic events.
Newly commissioned by Liverpool ONE and Culture Liverpool for the ‘Year of the Horse’, a stunning Horse lantern will take pride of place on Thomas Steers Way throughout the festivities until Tuesday 3 March. Situated in front of the famous Liverpool letters (which have also been updated with Lunar New Year artwork), this is another great place to take selfies! Royal Albert Dock Liverpool
This year, the city’s Chinese New Year plans are bringing celebrations to Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront. With a programme of events set to amaze visitors, make the most of your day at the dock.
Art Workshops
Families are invited to get creative with a series of free drop-in arts and crafts workshops running from 16 to 20 February. Hosted inside PANAM, Revolution, and The Discovery Zone at The Beatles Story, these sessions offer a hands-on way for children to create their own Chinese New Year–inspired masterpieces.
Chinese New Year Dragon Installation
Created especially for this year’s festivities, from 14th February, visitors will be greeted by two striking, large-scale dragon installations located on either side of Salthouse Bridge. Commissioned from specialist workshops in China, these artistic dragons create a colorful photo point to mark the Year of the Horse. Don’t forget to tag us in your social posts using #CNYLiverpool.
Fiesta of Fire
Returning for its third consecutive year, Fiesta of Fire transforms the inner quay with dazzling pyrotechnic performances by Bring the Fire Project.
Returning with a new look for this year, on 15 and 21 February visitors can enjoy an immersive 15-minute film projected onto the façade of the Maritime Museum, enhanced by freestyle fire artists on the inner key and an electrifying live soundtrack. Additionally, from 16 – 22 February, excluding 21st, enjoy a special Dock Shorts animation celebrating the Year of the Horse, projected daily onto the Maritime Museum from 5pm–10pm.
Dockside dining
Home to some of Liverpool’s finest independent bars and restaurants, alongside much-loved established brands, enjoy a lunchtime light bite or early evening meal with prime views across the water. Located in Britannia Courtyard, The Beatles Story will be handing out free Beatles-themed fortune cookies to visitors across the weekend to mark the occasion.
