This International Day of Disabled People, DaDa is excited to present #DDFIExtra – a winter programme of social justice and artist development.
#DDFIExtra builds on the momentum developed through our 40th anniversary festival ‘DaDaFest International 40 – Rage: A Quiet Riot’ presented earlier this year. Here is a snapshot of what is to come…
Rushton Residency and Writers Workshop.
DaDa are introducing the Rushton Residency programme, new for 2025, an evolution of DaDa’s long-standing annual Rushton Lecture, reflecting on the legacy of Edward Rushton, a British poet, writer and bookseller from Liverpool who opened a school for the Blind after losing his own vision.
It is Rushton’s passion, activism and drive for social justice that has been reflected and celebrated in our Edward Rushton lectures and is now re-imagined through our residency programme.
Artists from the UK, Tanzania and Nigeria will be taking up our first residencies exploring social justice and inclusion through the lens of disability across cultures and continents.
There is still time to join in writers workshops with our UK Rushton Resident Natalie Denny.

Natalie and our other DaDa Rushton Resident Lilian Munuo took over our instagram for International Day of Disabled people. If you missed it you can find out what they had to say in the highlgihts.

Hand Ships Sail Behind the Scenes Film Premiere
This International Day of Disabled People, DaDa is proud to present the premiere of ‘Hand Ships Sail –Behind the Scenes’.
Hand Ships Sail is a poetic conversation in British Sign Language (BSL) – the vital, visual and versatile language of British Deaf communities. Two Deaf women share their dreams for the future as they look out over the night sky.
This incredible projection by Cathy Mager of Spectroscope Studio graced the Cunard Buildings as part of #DDFI40 earlier this year. A film crew documented the experience, and this film captures the experience.
We are thrilled to share this film commissioned by The Space with you as part of #DDFIExtra, our winter programme.
Head here to find out more and watch the film now.
